Generation Yo

Well I'm not talking about the global trend, just the minor fraction of our college, the youngest and the most fresh guns out there in MEC. Well I was inspired to write this post after reading one of our passout's Facebook status.

Now MEC is like an extended version of higher secondary school... Full of yo gangs even at canteen... Heartful thanx for all the seniors for making our college life so beautiful!

I did some research into the matter and was surprised indeed. I christened our First years as Generation Yo. They are a herd apart.
Generation Yo Profile:
  • They are segregated into gangs.
  • You will never find a gang more than 5-6 students.
  • They know only english.
  • They essentially don't have a life and practically live online.
  • dey typ lyk dis.
  • They call each other cool dudes and rock stars though they all look like punks.
  • Hobbies include:
    • 'Freaking out' in major malls in the city.
    • Making blogs of their class.
    • Walking in groups around college and giggling
They are hip and happening. They make the final year Freakanmar's of MH look like ~@~ (Its a gtalk smiley).
From different stories I found a few are so arrogant and have total disregard for anything institutional. Like me. Well I don't retort to teachers in classes and all. I'm insecure. I just like hide and bitch about people.

OK joke time.
Q: What did one First year say to another when they got bored?
A: Lets freak out.

Previously such people were only found during a Yi meeting. Now that was 2 years ago. Yi MEC was simultaneously  called Yo MEC cause only the so called Yo teams joined Yi. Well that myth is totally shattered this year. Zero percent Yo infection detected in this year's Yi Net. Which is actually a good trend. Now Yi has a better reach among students I believe. It was not a planned consequence, but that it just happened like that. (I'm digressing from topic).

Now a whole batch is infected with such people. Actually infected is such a harsh word to use (sorry). Its like they live in an isolated island in the college, reaching to them one has to surpass blood thirsty sharks and patrol guards. Even if you reach there you will be caught before you make an escape plan.
Well as long as there is no access to get to that island there is no way to do an eye opener class and show them there is a world outside.

Blogs. I don't actually get it. Why Blogs? You have communities and groups to do groups sharing and which are rich in technology that supports group conversation why blogs which is much more administer centred. Whatever it is, its an trend shift. These blogs they record all the activities that happen in their day to day lives at college. Also the blogs have really interesting names which sound like some internal body parts (dentrites? oops its electrites. My bad).

When I made a community in my first year it seemed like a suicidal thing to do. First an enquiry will be made, which is an interview with a panel of 5 members. Then they ask questions which will make your skins curl. Then they say to delete the community or else something else will get deleted. Simple instruction, in an easy to follow manner that you instantly delete the community. But it was fun in a way to look back at what happened those days.

I'm not saying all this is bad. Its not an issue about good or bad. But the point I want to make is the communication gap that is happening right now is going to put a dent on our college culture. What is the most beautiful thing about our college? Its the closed loopness. Everybody almost knows everybody. The thing about the people in Yo land is they are not willing to come out. Scared or lack of interest, whatever it may be unless this is tackled, in a few years MEC will be something entirely different from what we see now.
So my dear Generation Yo, I know you people have the sense of humour to take this lightly. So do take this as part of e-ragging by your non existent senior. Consider this as an initiation. A whole world of college life awaits you, so don't live it amongst yourselves.

Ok question time. Decode the letters in the above image. What do they signify?

Until next time,  Ciao.

reminds me - wen we were 3rd yr, there was this fresher who proclaimed 'I am a freak'. & SO he was known for the rest of his college life - atleast for the following 3 yrs it took me to get the bloody certeeeckatt !

The worst thing about MEC is the fact that people are so ready to fall into a category (Yo or MH or whatever nonsense you all call it nowadays) and stay there and complain and smirk at the other group. It never used to be like that 4-5 years ago. And it was that kinda attitude that made the college what it is now. If the Yo's stayed away from the Non-Yo's (maan i hate that word) 90% of the good stuff that happened in the COLLEGE would never have happened. So chuck your bloody inhibitions and get a real life. You get only one.

There isn't any blood thirsty sharks and piranhas near the "yo island" !! All there is are imaginary ones that you imagine ! so come back to reality and venture out into the water ! Who knows you may even like the "yo island"

Hey fake MECian bro. Ur actually defending Model Engineering College?? Firstly, they have they audacity to call themselves a college with only enough space to outstrip an orphange. Then u mentioned sumthng about college life, college culture, etc... These don't exist at MEC Thrikkakara.Period. And for a fact, i thnk that the juniors are pretty much on the right track, if they want even a semblance of a college life, sumthing that this "college", can never hope to provide. So, all you first years out there. Have fun bros. Ur nt going to get it at college. Get it outside. And as for u, Fake MECian, i seriously doubt if you were an MEC student, coz u don't seem to know shit about whats happening. U need to get ur facts right. Get a more reliable/knowledgeable source

Dear...
We are just pass outs of MEC. In our 1st yr time there was'Ragging'. Actually its not exact ragging but its a version of our style of ragging viz Chori...2nd yrs nte pukka chori alla bt oru pakaram veettal anu, enikk kittiyathu ninakkum tharum enna attitude. But surely it was our 3rd yrs n final yrs who made our our college life so active since they had built a platform for us to learn chori, experience chori etc whenever they got free time...So batchle ellarem nannayi ariyan patti...
Then...i was there in college recently. At that time we went to Canteen in the morning..." Eswaraa...2 3 gangs undu...5 6 per veetham athil galsum undu"...van discussion anu.thts y put that status in fb...

I am sure MEC obviously will be like an extended plus two school soon. We cant do anything against that...only the new batches can do something...

@Last commenter- U dont know how we enjoyed the life at MEC. U can ask ur seniors about the same. Like women MEC is something impossible to live with or without.

@ Juniors- TRY TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BATCH MATES,SENIORS....at least all of Your Class mates.

Ths "yo" culture is the byproduct of todays "MALL LIFE ".. :P .. cant do anythin .. thank god my class isnt so ... :)

Anti YO! :-D

Let the first years choose what culture they want to follow. Why to force them into so called our way . If they find happiness in the samll 5-6 ppl gang, n if they could keep the frndship till the end . I think that is a good thing.

MEC held its head high among the academic circles because of its students. The students who joined MEC were a class apart. With the inner desire to prove, to assimilate knowledge and to be the best, we often went great lengths to achieve our aim. These were possible because of the intimacy that existed in the college. Please keep it.

Make us, XMECians proud.

Hey there,(im a first yr) well, the yo groups as you have mentioned MAY be the result of improvised lifestyles and mall freakouts..and i agree with you that these *gang formings* can disrupt the unity. but have you seniors thought why the heck if any first year interacts 'a step away' from you people??

Lemme put it this way , which first year can walk all the way from zam zam to the back entrance of mec without having to fear being picked up to nakshatra or some other places?? eh? And normally, this fear would reflect in each first years mind..Guys, why dont you understand? We are not trying to be superior in *freakishness* to u guys or being self hidden in small gangs,we love to be friends with you people and also to interact with you, its because some are still scared and these *some* can cause the whole gang or even the whole class to become introverted (as your yo island) I have indeed received very friendly and helpful behaviour frm some of u ppl, but some...lets just say it was not so great!!.. So control ur batchmates first and teach them how to be in *good* superiority over us but not use that word for storming over us.. And of couse due to the different time settings,we rarely have chances to see many of u guys, and hopefully ,by the second yr,we'll meet all of u, but by then theres a huge chance 'YO' will be the new face of the batch.. unless you try to stop it..

^ hey bro, I dint say you people stay away from us. That is obvious. That is bound to happen.
What i said was the rules imposed now, enhanced security for you guys, on top of that frequent complaints(well that can be justified for the intensity. dont blame you ppl) all these keep u away from us.
Point corrected??

To all first years out ther, in ur first year at college, u may hate MEC.. u may think tht +2 life was heaven and college life is boring and all.. slowly, wen it comes to arts time and all, it will change.. u will start knowing the college.. ur seniors.. from tht instant onwards, it will be fun..
May be our college is more strict now etc. etc. tht can ruin some fun.. but still, u will come to know tht MEC is awesome.. :).. jus wait for some more time.. :)

MEC is good coz u get to know everyone else in the college.. and thts the best part abt our college.. if u keep a distance from others, then college life will be boring for sure.. so break the walls.. and enjoy college life.. :)

Copyin the words of my fried, MEC is My Everlasting Celebration.. best time of my life.. :)... nothin can replace it..
so, enjoy ur college life.. :)
