The List full of Failures

    MEC FORT
There have been a number of developments in college since Smokey got into power. That includes enhanced security in the wake of concern over our present terrorist filled society. (But what about security from terrorists in the inside ? Terrorists who bombard our lives with boredom? )
  • New rolling shutters at the entrance : Beautiful greasy new rolling shutters have been fixed at the front entrance. Keeping goats out of the campus  was the burning problem that was affecting the students, apparently. Only a senate meeting wasn't conducted to discuss this burning issue, that's all. It was a matter that needed immediate attention.
  • Big gate small gate: Now there are four + one = Five gates in college. All except one small tiny one are locked at all times except during lunch and for a few hours after 4 30 PM. Security has been tightened manifold. We are almost invincible!! Nobody can invade MEC!! Oh wait.. I forgot.. MEC is a college, right? Or was there some declaration changing it to ‘Model Engineering Fort’ status? Before you know it, 2 college German Shepherds and an electric fence will appear.
But more than the limitation that they impose, the gates stand for the overall atmosphere of MEC. There are no more open welcoming gates around here. Everything is hostile. The whole place is now a cage, a zoo. Now this move by the authority is more psychological.
  • Enclosed bike parking lot: A failed attempt to ensure that all students park only in the Shawshank style enclosure, with the giant power tower at the centre that must stand for Smokey’s towering (wish to) control over everything( Remember Mordor..The Eye..Dark Lord ??).  Too bad that didn’t work out

  • Closed library and CC: The college library is truly loaded. There are so many thousand books, everything that a technical or art loving reader would want. The only difficult part is, getting to the books.  If you are preparing your paper for a paper presentation contest and you want to make last minute references, you have three options:

  • - Go to the library Oops, the watchman will tackle you before you even get to the library door’. Even if you do get there, you won’t be able to enter because the library will be sealed shut. Churukki paranjaal, if you want to borrow a book at night:

  1. Katta Paara eduthukondu varuka.
  2. Watchmane adichu veezhthi.
  3. Lock kuthippolichu door thorannu and sign in the register (This part is really important).
  4. police ethunnathinu munpu book eduthu odikkonam.
Now that is an adventurous way to take a book from the library thanks to the prevailing situation. Must be fun right, after all in our uneventful life.
  •  - Take your laptop ( if you DARE) and log on to the IEEE portal and track down the necessary paper, but oops!! It can be downloaded only from the CC using the college accounts! So head straight for the CC… but then again.. ** (Problem repeat,  JMP -Go To Library-).

I hear my friends talk about how in IIT’s and NIT’s go to their libraries and computer centres near midnight and freely look up whatever they want to, without having people stick guns up their asses – the true spirit of learning. I wonder what the point is in shutting the doors instead of opening them in welcome. Isn’t this the place where we should feel welcome? Or is that too much to ask? No wait we are not one of the top engineering colleges in the country to provide such out-of-the-earth, IITian privileges, right?

There are a lot of things that don’t deserve too much attention, and therefore, haven’t been bothered about:
  • Classrooms: Our classes are stuck between ancient and modern traditions. We have very well ventilated classrooms, with lots of windows. But the problem is, the majority of the windows have no latches. They are nailed shut. Don’t ask me why. Fans provide sound energy and also a little wind energy. We have 2 plug points in each class of approximately 40 students. Usually, only one works. While all major colleges have lecture hall each equipped with its own LCD projector and screen, we still have rickety old boards, most of them in, as some say, 'Thurumbu Scene'.

  • Projectors: We have lots of projectors in college. Each department has three categories of projectors – the ones that work alright, the ones that work sometimes and the ones that are prototypes. I remember one particular projector that stayed with a broken lamp for over a year. Most of these unfortunate machines have some part of their anatomy missing. Most don’t have their height adjust release button. Some have VGA cables that add whole new ‘colours’ to the projected image. We also have crippled projection screens that behave like some of us, when we are drunk, and keep swaying from one side to another, never standing straight.
    • Sound system: We have a truly mind boggling sound system in the college ‘auditorium’. Every speaker that works, has a default noise that comes  with the sound. The amplifier, as the story goes, was installed in the auditorium when the college was established (1990). To preserve the nostalgia its still kept there as a symbol of eternal 'noise'. The Ahuja Amplifier website claims the company is seventy years old. So our amplifiers might as well be the first ones they made. While our ‘competitor’ colleges have Bose sound systems, we still live with Ahuuuuja!

    • Amphitheatre: (I don't even know what it means !). Yes we have an amphitheatre at college. We cultivate GRASS on it. The central region of the building is actually an amphitheatre. Apparently about 10000 rupees was spent on planting some special variety of grass in it. Our college is a nice place to learn about step farming. Students are barred from damaging the fancy grass ( which I’m sure I have seen along the road leading to my house) or any other wild bush that grows in the amphitheatre.

    • Net connection: We luckily have an 8mbps net connection. But its only in documents and 'parachil'. We all experience the Internet in the highest speed possible, don't we? There are often talks among the people who practically live in the CC, that we should complain and get all connections upgraded. But those remain inside the walls of CC just like those people.

Conclusion: Our MEC is now a Special Government Institution. Now, you will not find such a usage in any law book. Let me explain what an SGI is – it is a government institution where all the usual evils ( corruption, inefficiency, non-punctuality) exist, but where everything concerned with student freedom is the direct opposite of government offices. Thus such an institution will have the bad sides of both government and private institutions.  Now I may have missed a lot of points. This is only an appetizer. One may argue what's the use complaining about every possible thing that is wrong. Well that's not the point I'm driving at. I've this habit of listing out my failures in a piece of paper. After listing them, I spend sometime reflecting upon them.. where I went wrong.. what changes I need to make, to improve. After that I take a lighter and burn that list. Now this is symbolic (Don't jump into conclusions that I'm crazy). It symbolises the death of failures (get it!!). Marks a new beginning. This is one such list I've made. A List of Epic Failures of our college. I suggest you all to use the comment section to add to the Epic Failure list. After that lets all reflect on these issues. And lets all work together to burn this list. (Please comment to express your opinion and not just to vent your frustration. Use the blog as a portal to make SOLUTIONS ) Stay tuned for the post to follow.  The MEC Wish List.....

    Adding to the list.....

Non responsive students: The MEC system has now successfully developed a new breed of students who dnt respond, no matter what goes on around them. The funny thing is that, these very students form the senate, responsible for forming a bridge between the management nd the student community. So, the non resposive students have been given the big function of responding to the attrocities goin on at college !!!

One thing thats different about MEC is(or was??) the self sufficient students. The day students stop caring about their rights, MEC will jst cease to exist the way it used to. And i am worried.... is that day very close ??? or have we actually passed that point ???

I still remember back in the days when we pc people were handling a recruitment event for our batch, one of 'em company people marched straight into the 'students' bathroom despite our strong these-toilets-are-under-renovation dialogues (I guess he saw some students using them earlier). To show how his face was before and after the episode, I would need (a colon and) in order, a closing and opening parenthesis. Needless to say, even after the actual renovation(duh), things haven't improved much.

In addition, I am sure if this list were to include inputs specific to particular departments, there would be no end to the comments on this page :P. The truth is no institution is perfect, but the ones that atleast try to be perfect are the ones that are capable of utilizing their resources -be it the facilities, the intellectual capital or anything else- to the fullest, at the end of the day becoming the best and most prestigious.

Leave the midnight library times. Has anyone ever tried visiting the library during the study holidays? I had. And I had asked the staff whether they'll be open or not. And they had gleefully agreed they'll be open. But as it turned out I was so unfortunate that everytime I paid a visit, all the staff was mysteriously on leave...

Library should be accessible to all those who need it. It is not supposed to have any sort of restrictions from anyone. Library should be opened in all the study holidays. But its very disappointing to hear that a principal who is having a doctorate is doing these kind of actions (I really doubt he is a professor or not). But I must say this also. If you guys need any change from the present scenario u have to react. There is no other solution. Now fakemecian is reacting in a way he can.. Just like that everyone of you have to react. I am sure your parents ll definitely support it.Get him down... DOnt think that he ll change.. he ll never change.

When Jyothi John sir was the principal other staff used to put up posters all around the college protesting against inadequate resources in the college. I think its time for the students to put up these protest against the authorities. Raise your voice!!!!... final years!! .. wat the hell are u guys doing??? licking smokeys ass???? ... arent there any one there with guts????

i would also lik to point condition of toilets...machines of workshops..... .and lot of things we must improve....but we are not the worst and not even the best............

Good one dude. carry on. Hope you can cause a revolution:)
i can write atleast 5 pages about the "the origin of sound system in MEC". There was lot of red tapism and misappropriation of assets
You are very lucky that you have the Ahuja systems. some years back there was just one corded mike which will work only if you hold it at 45 degree elevation North by Northwest. But at that time students had unbound freedom.
Guys don't let yourself down. Let's see what XMEC can do about this.

    Great work dude...

I recently heard a story of a XMecian being not allowed to speak to a student when he visited the campus ? and when the XMecian stood for his rights, Smokey ordered his BlackCat Commandos to close down the college gates so that he cannot take his car out ? Heard luckily our Hero was a tough nut to crack and took the car through the basket ball court and out.

Any one knows details of this incident ?

hey fakemecian.. make a seperate section in ur blog to hold discussions. Now the whole discussions are taking place in each blogs comment section, it will be nice if you have a single place for it. :)

    Awaiting for new posts!!

    Anonymous said...

The effort in this blog is awesome..but i doubt, if all the vigour and enthusiasm in the comments and posts will mostly stay within this blog itself, like all those discussions inside the CC room. This is a great way to enlighten the crowd and make the xmecians know, that there are people who would love to respond and are sick of whats happening at our alma mater.

I strongly feel something solid should come up. I should say, our hero Mr Smokey is highly diplomatic to reason with. He ll either easily reason out with whoever is talking to him, and if he feel that its not working, he will raise his voice and aaale pedippikkaan nokkum.. :)

Again, honestly, I am not sure ( am not discouraging) but would it be possible to overthrow him or anything? Well, I guess present seniors could take up some initiative and show some leadership to EDUCATE juniors so that they don't turn out dumb by just chewing in text books and not enjoying the otherwise highly fun and educational MEC life. You could actually take up your freedom and use it very responsibly. You dont have to ask permission to get your freedom, just take it. And if something happens, people stay together and reason out with him. Maybe jsut disobey and stay cool. What could follow, a suspension to the maximum? But is that a big deal, if you can have the whole college/ atleast your classmates with you( would they be?)

Ask for a whole college meeting, with Smokey and the whole lot at MEC and make a planned effort rather than a senate meeting, which would be not that useful mostly. Go invite him for that and people talk to him on the face. Use the forum to reason with him in logic and not to show ur frustration or raise your voice. If some of you could stand up and talk to him in front of a huge crowd, it would be great. Make a very planned effort for the same. Once its all planned, maybe make a document and give it to all teachers and Smokey and invite them. I guess, anyone would fumble in front of a thousand students who are all convinced about their genuine demands and a set of teachers who could even support you with certain things on the open at the forum, encouraged by your unity. But I say, not one flaw should happen.

The bottom line, I guess is you need some leaders. Some people who are confident, responsible and reasonable.
Just my 2 paisa- am not sure, if its practical..but i guess i know some people who could do this succesfully..So please, forget all( any) differences withing yourselves and come together atleast this once.. The common enemy could unite you all :)
I apologise for the confusing manner of presenting the whole thing, its become a part of me now I guess :) All the best

hey...did any1 notice..now theres a sign board outside our college..it says "school ahead"..how the hell did these pwd guys come to know abt our pathetic situation..

    Anonymous said...

FYI There are more than 30 projectors in our college, which does not work(its in the store)(may be the bulbs were sold out as each costs about Rs15000). And all these projectors might have been bought with the tequip fund. And who knows if 100 projector bills were clamed for these 30 projectors.

Mr. Smokey has interest only to harrase students and show his power in unwanted areas, when there are many good things he can actually do.

Does any one has courage to ask about this?? Please do ask. There are still good people amoung the staff whom you can believe in as i got these details from one of them.

At a meeting I attended today , smokey when asked ,if he had contacts with the industry , said " We in the academia have no contact with anyone in the industry , the only people we know are they people we buy equipments from "
Is this acceptable from a person who heads an engineering college of repute ? This clearly underscores his incompetence.

    Anonymous said...

The only way we have contact with the industry is through our Alumni. And we are 4th best in Industry interaction by the MINT RANKING.

Mr. Smokey thinks that we dont have a strong Alumni. For him alumni is an organisation whhich donates money for building Auditorium or for renovating the Kakoosa(which was once actually done by our xmecians seeing the pathetic condition here) so the college fund allotted for the same can be eaten away by lafy and gang...

I too was there in the room where you sat, but I was on the other side. I think you are a hypocrite, as you very well know in what context Principal said about the contacts in the Industry.

    Mr. Other Side guy,

What about the post after the one you were mentioning? We all(inclduing you)know who is the real hypocrite. But you are not accepting it because of the financial and political benefits you are getting.

    Hello other side guy,

There are a lot more issues which needed your attention in the posts above that. Why didn't you care to reply to that? (May be you dont have any answer alle??). Mr. Other side, please understand that this is the main problem with our college.

The comments are getting longer and more professional!
And am keen to hear from the parents and the staff.

And regarding the meeting with all the students, I doubt the practicality. Because our hero, as I can perceive, won't allow for a meeting regarding this (even if he does it won't be productive).

And elaborate on the "Other side" business and the "hypocracy" involved, whoever had said that.

    Anonymous said...

Sorry, the gender is not correct. It should be the lady on the other side. What I said was for the person to whom I had replied. But seeing that you people have not cared to be polite, I think I should refrain from posting here. Any way the people who attended the meating will know why it was said so by the Principal.

    Faiz Ibrahim P said...

There is a serious misconception on the part of the anonymous student. The anonymous student didn't attend the meeting because if he would have then he would agree that there was support from the college authorities towards Technopreneur. Also regarding the "industrial contact" comment by the anonymous student; everyone in the meeting would agree with me that it was in a positive context.

Hey guys, how about mailing smokey a link to the blog everytime you make an update in the site??.. Yeah.. Maybe he will be monitoring the site already.. But this is better than setting the CC homepages to fakemecian.. Atleast we dont let them feel they have found cibola everytime.. Moreover what if smokey is moved by these kind of progressive sarcasm..(yes, this is the way we first years are made to think at mec now..v only have hope for a better tomorrow(devoid of smokey))

i think you're starting, or at least trying to start an honest initiative to gather support from all corners to focus on these problems. The only problem is while blogging will keep these problems fresh in everyone's mind, I don't know how constructive the outcome will be.

The fact is that we at MEC have taken it for granted that overcoming the problems posed by Smokey in everything constructive we try to do at this college is part of our job. We may not like it, but we are resigned to it. I hear people swear, complain, grumble, but no real solutions. It's because everyone fears a strong backlash from the same man who we know has bent the rules very often before. When I joined in S1, I would've been among the first to sign up to raise my voice, but in this climate, I accept that I too feel forced to back down and comment as Anonymous. I think it's this collective fear from our student body that we need to deal with first, and i think our seniors and x-mecians can play a great role in that respect. X-MECians have seen their college decline and probably feel the pain more than us. Though they may have no personal gain to get, I've seen that the X-MECian community is among the most selfless alumni bodies of any institution! Here's to hoping that they can make a difference in this effort.....
